Justice in Lawrence County, Kentucky.

Who do these Justices belong to?

In 1830 in Lawrence County Kentucky, two Justice men appear in the census records:  John and Bram.

John's record shows 2M(0-5) 2M(5-10) 1M(15-20) 1M(20-30) 1M(50-60) 2F(10-15) 1F(15-20) 1F(30-40)
Bram's record shows 1M(20-30) 1F(0-5) 1F(20-30)

It would appear these men are father and son.  They are living right next door to each other in this record.

In 1840, Bram is gone, most likely in Johnson County.  John is still there as well as two new Justice males living right next to him, Ehud and Eli.

John's record shows 2M(10-15) 2M(15-20) 1M(60-70) 1F(20-30) 1F(40-50)
Ehud's record shows 1M(0-5) 1M(20-30) 1F(0-5) 1F(20-30)
Eli's record shows 1M(0-5) 1M(30-40) 1F(5-10) 1F(20-30)

There is also a George Justice living in Lawrence County in 1840.  He, however, came from Floyd County, Kentucky and is a son of William Justice and Margaret Johnson and does not seem closely related to the above John.  I had looked into him being a brother of George, but it appears that George's brother, John, moved back to Virginia to raise his family.

By 1850, John must have died.  There is a record who appears to be Ehud, but it is very hard to read.  Eli is easily found in the census.

Ehud's home shows he is 35 and born in Kentucky.  There is no wife in the home, apparently she had passed away sometime between 1844 and 1850.  Children include: Lerviny age 13, John age 9, Angeline age 6, Cordelia age 4, all born in Kentucky.

Eli's home shows him age 40, his wife, Elizabeth age 37, and son, William age 10.

There are several other young Justice men living in the county by 1850 and after separating out all of George's children, I feel like the rest should be children of John, as no other older Justice moves into the area.

The tree as I see it:

John Justice was born between 1770 and 1780.  He died before 1850.  He married Sarah.  She was born in 1790 in Virginia.  She died after 1850.

Children:
1.  Abyram Justice was born in 1809 in Kentucky.
2.  Elijah Justice was born in 1810 in Kentucky.
3.  Female Justice born between 1810 and 1815 in Kentucky (1813?)
4.  Ehud Justice was born in 1815 in Kentucky.
5.  Female Justice born between 1815 and 1820 in Kentucky. (1817?)
6.  Female Justice born between 1815 and 1820 in Kentucky. (1819?)
7.  David Justice was born in 1821 in Kentucky.
8.  Male Justice born between 1820 and 1825 in Kentucky. (1823?)
9.  Male Justice born between 1825 and 1830 in Kentucky. (1826?)
10. Male Justice born between 1825 and 1830 in Kentucky. (1828?)

1.  Abyram Justice was born in 1809 in Kentucky.  His wife died between 1847 and 1850.  He is found in Johnson County, Kentucky in 1850.  Also living in the same county is Samuel Justice, who is a son of Edmund and Rodesia Layne Justice.

Children:
1a.  Female Justice born between 1825 and 1830 in Kentucky. (1830?)
2a.  Ehud Justice born 1832 in Kentucky.
3a.  Bethalia Justice born 1834 in Kentucky.
4a.  Duriecy Justice was born in 1839 in Kentucky.
5a.  Andrew Justice was born in 1841 in Kentucky,
6a.  Susanah Justice was born in 1845 in Kentucky.
7a.  Savanah Justice was born in 1847 in Kentucky.

2.  Elijah Justice was born in 1810 in Kentucky.  He married Elizabeth.  She was born in 1813 in Kentucky.

Children:
1b.  Female Justice born between 1830 and 1835 in Kentucky.
2b.  William Justice born 1840 in Kentucky.

4. Ehud Justice was born in 1815 in Floyd County, Kentucky.  His first wife died sometime before 1850.  He married second to Phebe Pack.  She was born in 1833 in Kentucky,

Children with 1st wife:
1c. Lerviny Justice born 1837 in Kentucky
2c  John Justice born 1840 in Kentucky
3c. Angeline Justice born 1844 in Kentucky
4c. Cordelia Justice born 1846 in Kentucky.

Children with Phebe Pack
5c.  Levi Justice born 1852 in Lawrence County, Kentucky.

** Most researches state that this Ehud, the one who Phebe, is the son of Abyram.  I do not feel this is correct,  I think they are two different Ehuds since the marriage record states his birth year is 1818, which fits with this Ehud more.  Abyram's Ehud was most likely born in Lawrence County, Kentucky, not Floyd County as the marriage record states.  Abyram's Ehud married a Mary in Johnson County, Kentucky in 1859.  He does appear to have had a first wife, but I do not think it was Phebe.

7.  David Justice was born in 1821 in Kentucky.  He married Margaret.  She was born in 1827 in Kentucky.  In 1850, a Sarah Justice, aged 60 is living with him.  I assume she is his mother and that she was the wife of John since no other female fits his wife in the census.

Another possibility for David is that he is the son or brother-in-law of the below Elizabeth and Sarah is his mother or grandmother.  A Sarah married William Justice who was the father of James who could be the husband of the widowed Elizabeth below.  William and Sarah also had a son named David,  A note I saw stated "David Justice, Administrator of the estate of James Justice, deceased, deed dated 3-09-1849, tract of land to Allen Justice.Page: B-30."

Children
1d.  Nancy J. Justice was born in 1844 in Kentucky.
2d.  Julie Justice was born in 1846 in Kentucky.
3d.  Sarah M. Justice was born in 1848 in Kentucky.

Other Lawrence County, Justices.

In 1850 in Lawrence County also appears the following family.
Elizabeth Justice F 45 Kentucky
Allen Justice M 23 Kentucky
Rhoda Justice F 19 Kentucky
Nancy Justice F 16 Kentucky
Elizabeth Justice F 12 Kentucky
Manerva Justice F 8 Kentucky

If Elizabeth's husband was at least 45, he would be too old to be one of John's children since his other sons in 1830 are accounted for.  They may have been married before 1830 and still be John's son, but without knowing where John was in 1820 to see if he had an older son, I cannot positively say this Elizabeth is a daughter-in-law of John.  It appears she may have been the wife of James Justice who was born in 1804.  He died in 1846.

If Sarah's husband was older than she by a couple of years then these three families could represent the three unknown sons for John.  They all, however, could also be sons of the widowed Elizabeth listed above.

Sarah Justice F 23 Kentucky
Anna Justice F 3 Kentucky
Elizabeth Justice F 2 Kentucky

Pilot Justice        M 24 Kentucky born 1826
Margaret Justice F 19 Kentucky

Hamilton Justice M 22 Kentucky born 1828
Martha Justice F 17 Kentucky

If I had to guess where this John belongs, I would choose John Justice who was the son of Simeon and Elizabeth Turley Justice.  According to the notes in my file, John's brother, Simeon, settled in Beaver Creek in Floyd County which later became part of Lawrence County.  Since these Justice families tended to live close to their relatives, it would make sense if John lived here too.  The only census record I have for John, son of Simeon, is an 1810 census which is the right age and shows 2 males 0-10 in the home, which would fit with the above John.  I could not locate a John in Floyd County in 1820 who would work for either John.

The Snow Family - Children of Thomas Snow and Winifred Jordan

As I mentioned in my previous post, Thomas and Winifred Jordan Snow had 7 children, all who are mentioned in their father's will: Sally, Mary, William, Henry, Thomas, Mark and John. I do not know the exact birth order for the children.
I will start with William. I do not have much on him. In Jackson County, Georgia there is a William Snow listed on page 89 of the 1809 Tax Digest. Mark Snow, William's brother is also found in this digest. Could William have moved with his brother Mark from Virginia to Georgia? It is possible, but without further record of William it is hard to know. Other Snows in the digest include a Moses and a Fountain Snow. Fountain is said to be Mark's oldest son and I have no idea who Moses is.
Next, we will look at Thomas Snow, Jr. Thomas served in the Revolutionary War under Capt. Benjamin Rice in the regiment of Col. Charles Lynch. His unit was in the Battle of Guilford Court House. Thomas was discharged on April 24, 1781. Thomas married Rachel Bennett on October 10, 1781 in Bedford County, Virginia. I have no proof of the children of Thomas and Rachel, but I have the following list: Vincent, Frances, Clarissa, Sarah, Thomas, Abner, Jabez, Jehu, Winifred and Samuel.
I know very little on John Snow, another son of Thomas and Winifred. In my notes I have that he died in 1894, but no other information is listed on him in my tree.
Mary Snow has been a bit tricky to research. I know she married a Bennett, but which one?! In my tree, I have Micajah Bennett (1755-1825) as her husband. This Micajah is the brother of Thomas's wife Rachel. He may, however, have been the Micajah Bennett that married Ann Johnson and had the following children: Jeptha Stephen and Jesse Johnson. He may have also been married twice, once to Ann and once to Mary. I need more records and research to know for sure. If Micajah and Mary are correct, the following children are recorded for them: Peter and Sarah Elizabeth. Other possible children for Micajah and Mary are Nancy, Polly, Micajah and William. Again, much more documentation is needed for this family.
Not much is known about Henry Snow. I have in my file that he married Martha Cheek and had 3 children: William, Joel and Mary. Again, no real proof.
Sally Snow is the second daughter of Thomas and Winifred. She married John Adams. John witnessed Thomas Sr's will. I have a partial transcript of John's will that lists the following children: Thomas, William, James, Winnifred Thomas, Polly Dalton, Peggy Leftwich, Sarah Weeks (should be Sinah), Sarah Leftwich, John and Milly. If anyone has a full transcript or copy of this will, I would love to see it!
I saved Mark Snow for last since he is my ancestor. I will type on his family in more detail on my next post.

The Hale Family - Stephen T. Hale

Stephen T. Hale was born on August 14, 1861 in Randolph County, Alabama. He is the son of Rachel Lurania Melvina Hale. Stephen moved with his family from Randolph County, Alabama to Carroll County, Georgia sometime between 1870 and 1880 where he married Priscilla Jane Levens on March 3, 1889. Priscilla was born on March 18, 1853. After marrying, the couple moved back to Randolph County, Alabama, and by 1910 had moved to Heard County, Georgia. Later, they moved back to Randolph County, where Priscilla died on November 15, 1937. Stephen died on March 1, 1955 in Randolph County. Stephen and Priscilla had at least five children: Claudia, Stephen Ruge, Sarah, Isaac and an infant son.
Their oldest child, Claudia, was born in February 1890 in Alabama. In 1920, she was still unmarried and living with her parents. It is unknown whether she married after 1920 or when she died.
Stephen Ruge Hale was the oldest son and second child of Stephen and Priscilla Hale. He was born on October 31, 1893 in Alabama. He married Minnie Elizabeth Huddleston some time before 1923. Minnie was born on September 9, 1898. They became the parents of the following children: Lorell, Sally Mae, Lowell, Alears R. and Raye. Stephen died on May 14, 1934. Minnie died on September 11, 1984. They were both buried in the Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange, Georgia.
On September 22, 1895, the couple lost an infant son, their 3rd child.
Sarah Hale was the 4th child of Stephen and Priscilla. She was born in March 1897 in Alabama. She married first to a Mr. Johnson and had a son named Ernest in 1916. She married second to L. J. Hale. I do not know when she died.
Isaac Hale is the youngest son of Stephen and Priscilla. He was born on May 16, 1900 in Alabama. He married a woman named Nancy. Ike, as he was known, died on December 1, 1992 and is buried in Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange, Georgia.

The Powers Family - James M. Powers

The above Picture shows Michael Powers, James M. Powers and John Patrick Powers, the three brothers who came to the United States from Ireland.

James M. Powers was born on April 7, 1829 in Killucan, Westmeath County, Ireland. He was an older brother to Michael Powers. He came to America with his brothers and traveled with them as they came south to Coweta County, Georgia. He was the only one of his brothers to stay in Coweta County, settling in the town of Newnan.
On February 14, 1861, James married Sarah Jane Huggins. She was the daughter of Asa Huggins and Elizabeth Woody. Asa was an Inferior Court Judge in Coweta County, Georgia and also a deacon at New Hope Baptist Church in Coweta County. James and Sarah became the parents of eleven children: John H., Mary Isabelle, Marcella E., Sarah Luella, Ettie Dora, James Lawrence, Asa Thomas, William Patrick, Bridget Bessie, Infant Son and Jesse.
James fought in the Confederate Army with his brother, Michael. Shortly after his marriage, in May 1862, James enlisted in the Confederate Army in Newnan, Georgia. He claims he served until the war ended. On December 16, 1864, James was captured in Nashville, Tennessee and was a prisoner at Camp Chase in Ohio. After he returned home from the war, he added on two new rooms to the front of his home so he could give lodging to travelers. He wanted to provide a home for strangers who traveled because of his experience while he was traveling home from the war.
Sarah died on January 7, 1893. She was buried near her parents in their family cemetery. On September 13, 1906, James filed for his Indigent Pension Application. He claims, "For 10 yrs. have been so I could not labor; for the past 2 yrs. have been nearly blind in both eyes. Have rheumatism and kidney trouble. Generally broken down in health." James died on August 14, 1911 in Coweta County, Georgia, just months after his reunion with his brothers (detailed in the previous post). He was buried next to his wife in the Pike, Powers and Huggins Family Cemetery.
