Proof of Mamie Galloway Hendricks's parents was difficult to come by, but I think I have a good trail to follow in order to prove who they were.
On Find-A-Grave, as well as several trees, she is listed as the daughter of Oscar S. Galloway and his wife Lou Annie Bryant. I feel this is incorrect. Oscar and Lou Annie do not show a daughter in their home named Mamie for any census record. The supposed placement of Mamie as Oscar and Lou Annie's daughter comes from her obituary that apparently states she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. S. Galloway.
So, I began to search. I looked all over familysearch.org but did not find anything that proved Mamie was or was not Oscar's daughter. I then moved my search to other member trees to see what they said about Mamie. I found the tree of one of my close cousins who had Mamie as Oscar's daughter. He is a good researcher, so I put weight on what he states. I was still a little leery of accepting this, since no Mamie is in the census records with Oscar's family. So, I looked at Oscar in my cousin's files and noticed he had some newspaper articles.
These are the articles he had posted:
1926: "The Pickens Sentinel", Pickens, SC, issue of 18 Feb. 1926:
"Lon Galloway in Pickens County Jail Charged With the Murder of Al
Ramey - O. S. (Lon) Galloway is in the Pickens county jail charged with
the murder of Al Ramey at a whiskey still in Laurel Fork on Thursday,
February 11. ......Al Ramey's dead body was found by George Holcombe
last Friday.....O. S. (Lon) Galloway is a well known character in this
county. He is some sort of a preacher, but it is said not ordained.
His wife and nine children live at one of the mills in Liberty, but it
is understood that Galloway has not lived with them for some time."
1926:
"The Pickens Sentinel", Pickens, SC, issue of 10 June 1926: "Galloway
Gets Life Imprisonment - Found Guildy of Murder of Al Ramey; Jury
Recommends Mercy of the Court - ........"
1937: "The Pickens Sentinel", issue of 14 Oct 1937:"Galloway is Freed from State Bastile .
I noticed the (Lon) which is usually not a nickname for Oscar, so I went back on the search for a Lon/Lonnie/Alonzo who might have a daughter named Mamie and I found Alonzo S. Galloway and his wife Lela who had a daughter named Mamie who was born at the right time. Also in 1920, Alonzo's name was recorded as Olonso, making his initials O. S.
After some more looking, I found that Alonzo was most likely the O. S. Galloway mentioned in the articles. In 1930, there is an Alonzo Galloway who is listed as an inmate in Richmond, SC while Oscar is at home with his family. If Oscar had been the one accused of murder, he would be in jail, not with his family since he was not released until 1933.
So, in conclusion, I feel that the O. S. Galloway listed as Mamie's father is actually Alonzo Galloway and not Oscar Galloway and have reflected this believe in my tree.

Isreal/Ezra Justice born 1793
Many, if not all, researchers list a son named Ezra/Israel born in 1819 in Kentucky as his oldest son. It is clear from the older census records that he indeed had a son born between 1810 and 1820 and with his marriage happening in 1818, and a daughter already born in 1820, it would make sense that this son was born in 1819. That being said, I do have my doubts as to whether this son was the same Ezra who married Matilda Bishop Keen. Ezra, the younger, is listed as being 20-30 in 1840, which would fit with him being that oldest son, but there is one problem. Ezra was living out on his own in 1840, yet that oldest son of Israel is still living in his home. Also, in 1850 Ezra is listed as as being 45 (which is very clearly written) which would make his birth happening in 1805, which is way off from the 1819 birth year. I could not locate him any following census records, though some researchers site an 1860 record with a new wife, but his age is listed as 50 which would put him in line with the 1840 census but he would still be too old to be Israel's son.
If he is not Israel's son, then where does he belong? Also, who is that oldest son of Israel if it is not Ezra?
If anyone has any records or documents to help prove the parentage of Ezra, please let me know.
Ramblings: John Flemming Justice born 1829
John Flemming Justice was born in 1829 and supposed died in Maryland in the Civil War in 1864. There was a J. F. Justice who fought and died, but what he this John? Why would he be fighting in the North and South Carolina armies when he is from Kentucky? (though after typing this, apparently Greenville Justice did the same?) Also, there is a Flemming on the census records in Boyd County (1870 and 1880) who matches this Flemming in age and there is a marriage record to back it up. I do not show another Justice family with a Flemming born around that time. The Flemming listed in 1860 seems to have had a wife prior to his wife on that census and it matches perfectly if Fleming married both to Lucinda Blackburn, then she died after having a daughter and then he married Mary in 1856 to have the rest of the children.
Maybe there are two Flemmings born around 1830, one who married Lucinda and died in the civil war and one who married Mary and had the family in Boyd county. If there are 2 Flemmings then why can't I find them both in 1850 and 1860? I have one record in each year, and the one for 1860 seems to show that Flemming had a first wife which would support the two Flemmings being one.
If anyone has any data to show more information on John Flemming Justice, please let me know! At the moment, I feel that there was only one John Flemming and that the J. F. from the civil war was another person. I have not read the civil war documents as I do not have access to them to review them myself, so if anyone has, please tell me what they actually say! The indexes I see only list him as J. F., so those two letters could stand for many different things.
Flemming Justice
Most researchers list a John Flemming Justice as the son of Greenville and Rebecca based on a death record that states that John Flemming Justice was born in 1861 and died in 1944 and his parents were listed as John Justice and Lucinda Justice. There is NO census record that states a John EVER being in Greenville's home. There is a John Flemming and Lucinda Blackburn Justice who were married in 1851, but that John had remarried in 1856 and there is no son who would match the aforementioned record in the census data for that family either.
So who is this John Flemming Justice? He does not seem to fit with the only two families in the area who had a mother named Lucinda at the time he was born. My conclusion in the matter is that I do not think his name was John, but feel that James was the name he was given and that he is indeed the youngest child of Greenville.
I feel that this child of Greenville (how John and Greenville look the same I do not know, but without seeing the actual hand written record, I cannot determine the name for sure) is the best match for this Flemming. In the 1870 census record, the letter after James's name is easily read as A, H or F, as all the loops in the census takers writing and the poor copy of the record makes the letter hard to discern. On his marriage record, his name is recorded as James F. Justice. Why his death record is the only one which lists John as his name I do not know. Jas. and Jhn. of abbreviated can look similar if the handwriting is sloppy. Again, without seeing the death record to see how the name was written, I will not know for sure. On all other records, he is recorded as Flem or Fleming or some variation of that name. No where else is he referred to as James or John.
In my file, I have included James Fleming Justice, son of Greenville and Rebecca Lucinda Ferrell Justice unless someone can provide me with proof otherwise.

Lucinda Justice Hall
I think I am about ready to pull my hair out with this family. I am trying to figure out which Lucinda be longs with what family and I am a bit perplexed by this Lucinda.
Lucinda Justice Hall, by all accounts of all family trees I have seen has her as the daughter of Jonathan Justice and Hannah Doty. This seems odd to me since Lucinda's family is living in close proximity to John and Edmund, both sons of John and Elizabeth Young. I though she belonged with them since she is living near two other children of John and Elizabeth as well as the fact that she, being born in Kentucky, moved back with them, around the same time, to Virginia. While I currently have no Lucinda Justice attached to John and Elizabeth, they did have an unaccounted for daughter who would have been born between 1810-1820.

While I currently have no Lucinda Justice attached to John and Elizabeth, they did have an unaccounted for daughter who would have been born between 1810-1820.
Then, I began to do a little searching on Edmund and found that his second wife was a Polly Ann Hall, daughter of a William Hall and Lucy. Most people assume that the Lucinda here is a Justice and that Polly is her daughter. Edmund also has a son named Joshua who married a Rachel Hall, also a daughter of William and Lucy. Again, she is assumed to be Lucinda Justice's daughter. If this is true, then if Lucinda were John and Elizabeth's then that would mean Edmund married his niece and Joshua his first cousin. The first cousin one I have no problem with but it was very uncommon to marry a niece. So, this would make since for Lucinda to be Jonathan and Hannah's daughter.
So, then I began to look into Lucinda more and found that there was no Polly/Mary Ann Hall or Rachel Hall living with William and Lucinda in 1850. One would think an 18 year old and a 14 year old girl would still be living with their parents in 1850 if they did not marry until after that census. I could not locate another William or Lucinda in that area who had a Polly and a Rachel.
So, I expanded my search and I found something quite interesting. There are TWO Lucinda Justices who married a Hall. In Letcher County, Kentucky, just a few counties away, I found a Lucinda Hall, widowed, with her children and guess what?! She had daughters Polly Ann age 18 and a Rachel age 11. Pretty darn close if you ask me!
Now, the only thing that doesn't really work is that this particular Lucinda married a Jonathan Hall. Her son, Jonathan, is listed as a Jr. in his marriage record. I also have the following that identifies her husband as a Jonathan:
Book: 13th KentuckyCavalry, C.S.A. : Caudill's Army
By Ben Caudill CampNo. 1629
Hall, Jonathan J.: (3/13/1833-6/12/1916), Co. A, serv. prev.5th KY Inf., Co. F. pension states he serv. 5th KY Inf., Co. F. and 13th KYCav., Co. Now, this Lucinda, who married Jonathan, is living a few doors away from Allison Justice, who is a son of Jonathan Justice and Hannah Doty. If Lucinda who married Jonathan Hall is a daughter of Jonathan and Hannah instead of the other Lucinda, then there would be no issues if Edmund married Polly Ann since she would not be his niece.
So, with everything said, is it possible that Lucinda who married William Hall is a daughter of John and Elizabeth Young and that Lucinda who married Jonathan Hall is the daughter of Jonathan and Hannah Doty? Is there some record I am missing?

Justice in Lawrence County, Kentucky.
Who do these Justices belong to?
In 1830 in Lawrence County Kentucky, two Justice men appear in the census records: John and Bram.
John's record shows 2M(0-5) 2M(5-10) 1M(15-20) 1M(20-30) 1M(50-60) 2F(10-15) 1F(15-20) 1F(30-40)
Bram's record shows 1M(20-30) 1F(0-5) 1F(20-30)
It would appear these men are father and son. They are living right next door to each other in this record.
In 1840, Bram is gone, most likely in Johnson County. John is still there as well as two new Justice males living right next to him, Ehud and Eli.
John's record shows 2M(10-15) 2M(15-20) 1M(60-70) 1F(20-30) 1F(40-50)
Ehud's record shows 1M(0-5) 1M(20-30) 1F(0-5) 1F(20-30)
Eli's record shows 1M(0-5) 1M(30-40) 1F(5-10) 1F(20-30)
There is also a George Justice living in Lawrence County in 1840. He, however, came from Floyd County, Kentucky and is a son of William Justice and Margaret Johnson and does not seem closely related to the above John. I had looked into him being a brother of George, but it appears that George's brother, John, moved back to Virginia to raise his family.
By 1850, John must have died. There is a record who appears to be Ehud, but it is very hard to read. Eli is easily found in the census.
Ehud's home shows he is 35 and born in Kentucky. There is no wife in the home, apparently she had passed away sometime between 1844 and 1850. Children include: Lerviny age 13, John age 9, Angeline age 6, Cordelia age 4, all born in Kentucky.
Eli's home shows him age 40, his wife, Elizabeth age 37, and son, William age 10.
There are several other young Justice men living in the county by 1850 and after separating out all of George's children, I feel like the rest should be children of John, as no other older Justice moves into the area.
The tree as I see it:
John Justice was born between 1770 and 1780. He died before 1850. He married Sarah. She was born in 1790 in Virginia. She died after 1850.
Children:
1. Abyram Justice was born in 1809 in Kentucky.
2. Elijah Justice was born in 1810 in Kentucky.
3. Female Justice born between 1810 and 1815 in Kentucky (1813?)
4. Ehud Justice was born in 1815 in Kentucky.
5. Female Justice born between 1815 and 1820 in Kentucky. (1817?)
6. Female Justice born between 1815 and 1820 in Kentucky. (1819?)
7. David Justice was born in 1821 in Kentucky.
8. Male Justice born between 1820 and 1825 in Kentucky. (1823?)
9. Male Justice born between 1825 and 1830 in Kentucky. (1826?)
10. Male Justice born between 1825 and 1830 in Kentucky. (1828?)
1. Abyram Justice was born in 1809 in Kentucky. His wife died between 1847 and 1850. He is found in Johnson County, Kentucky in 1850. Also living in the same county is Samuel Justice, who is a son of Edmund and Rodesia Layne Justice.
Children:
1a. Female Justice born between 1825 and 1830 in Kentucky. (1830?)
2a. Ehud Justice born 1832 in Kentucky.
3a. Bethalia Justice born 1834 in Kentucky.
4a. Duriecy Justice was born in 1839 in Kentucky.
5a. Andrew Justice was born in 1841 in Kentucky,
6a. Susanah Justice was born in 1845 in Kentucky.
7a. Savanah Justice was born in 1847 in Kentucky.
2. Elijah Justice was born in 1810 in Kentucky. He married Elizabeth. She was born in 1813 in Kentucky.
Children:
1b. Female Justice born between 1830 and 1835 in Kentucky.
2b. William Justice born 1840 in Kentucky.
4. Ehud Justice was born in 1815 in Floyd County, Kentucky. His first wife died sometime before 1850. He married second to Phebe Pack. She was born in 1833 in Kentucky,
Children with 1st wife:
1c. Lerviny Justice born 1837 in Kentucky
2c John Justice born 1840 in Kentucky
3c. Angeline Justice born 1844 in Kentucky
4c. Cordelia Justice born 1846 in Kentucky.
Children with Phebe Pack
5c. Levi Justice born 1852 in Lawrence County, Kentucky.
** Most researches state that this Ehud, the one who Phebe, is the son of Abyram. I do not feel this is correct, I think they are two different Ehuds since the marriage record states his birth year is 1818, which fits with this Ehud more. Abyram's Ehud was most likely born in Lawrence County, Kentucky, not Floyd County as the marriage record states. Abyram's Ehud married a Mary in Johnson County, Kentucky in 1859. He does appear to have had a first wife, but I do not think it was Phebe.
7. David Justice was born in 1821 in Kentucky. He married Margaret. She was born in 1827 in Kentucky. In 1850, a Sarah Justice, aged 60 is living with him. I assume she is his mother and that she was the wife of John since no other female fits his wife in the census.
Another possibility for David is that he is the son or brother-in-law of the below Elizabeth and Sarah is his mother or grandmother. A Sarah married William Justice who was the father of James who could be the husband of the widowed Elizabeth below. William and Sarah also had a son named David, A note I saw stated "David Justice, Administrator of the estate of James Justice, deceased, deed dated 3-09-1849, tract of land to Allen Justice.Page: B-30."
Children
1d. Nancy J. Justice was born in 1844 in Kentucky.
2d. Julie Justice was born in 1846 in Kentucky.
3d. Sarah M. Justice was born in 1848 in Kentucky.
Other Lawrence County, Justices.
In 1850 in Lawrence County also appears the following family.
Elizabeth Justice F 45 Kentucky
Allen Justice M 23 Kentucky
Rhoda Justice F 19 Kentucky
Nancy Justice F 16 Kentucky
Elizabeth Justice F 12 Kentucky
Manerva Justice F 8 Kentucky
If Elizabeth's husband was at least 45, he would be too old to be one of John's children since his other sons in 1830 are accounted for. They may have been married before 1830 and still be John's son, but without knowing where John was in 1820 to see if he had an older son, I cannot positively say this Elizabeth is a daughter-in-law of John. It appears she may have been the wife of James Justice who was born in 1804. He died in 1846.
If Sarah's husband was older than she by a couple of years then these three families could represent the three unknown sons for John. They all, however, could also be sons of the widowed Elizabeth listed above.
Sarah Justice F 23 Kentucky
Anna Justice F 3 Kentucky
Elizabeth Justice F 2 Kentucky
Pilot Justice M 24 Kentucky born 1826
Margaret Justice F 19 Kentucky
Hamilton Justice M 22 Kentucky born 1828
Martha Justice F 17 Kentucky
If I had to guess where this John belongs, I would choose John Justice who was the son of Simeon and Elizabeth Turley Justice. According to the notes in my file, John's brother, Simeon, settled in Beaver Creek in Floyd County which later became part of Lawrence County. Since these Justice families tended to live close to their relatives, it would make sense if John lived here too. The only census record I have for John, son of Simeon, is an 1810 census which is the right age and shows 2 males 0-10 in the home, which would fit with the above John. I could not locate a John in Floyd County in 1820 who would work for either John.

I have not located him in 1850 nor in any records after 1870. Most researchers note that Amos Justice had a son named Daniel and claim his name is stated in his will, but the only child I see listed in his will is a John D.
Daniel is the right age to be an elder son of Amos. He is also the right age to be the eldest son of Jarrett. Jarrett has a son in 1790 but he is not listed in 1800, unless he was born in 1790 and had not yet turned 10 by the 1800 census and then had left the home by 1810.
If anyone has any incite as to who Daniel might belong to, please let me know!

Children of James Justice and Rachel Geer are:
1. Elizabeth Justice (married Keeter)
2. Susannah Justice (married Keeter)
Children of James Justice and Sarah Keeter
3. John A. Justice (married Sarah Wallace)
Possible parents:
1. Amos Justice and Mary McBrayer have an unknown son who would have been born around 1787. They lived for a time in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Though this possibility is probably not correct as this oldest son is still living within Amos's household in 1810.
2. Thomas Justice and Mary Dyer have 2 sons who may be old enough to be his father: Ezra and John. I have no information for either of these men or their descendants.
3. Jared/Jarrett Justice has a son in 1790 listed as under sixteen. I do not know his identity. Perhaps he is James? Jared is the only Justice left in Rutherford Co. NC with James in 1810. The William listed 2 doors from him in 1830 could possibly be Jared's son.
4. I cannot see any other Justice men who were descendants of John and Mary Moore Justice who could be his father. (The only men in Rutherford Co. NC in 1790 were Amos, Jared, Thomas Sr., and Thomas Jr.) If these men are not his father, then he must be a descendant of the Charles City, Virginia Justices, who I have not researched.
If anyone has a record to show James's parents or can provide other possibilities of men I may have overlooked, please let me know!

David and Mary A. McBrayer
In 1850 in Chickamauga, Walker, Georgia, living in the home of William McBrayer and his wife, Sarah (Dye), are a David McBriers and a Mary A. McBriers. David being born in 1825 in North Carolina and his wife, Mary A. being born in 1832 in Georgia. David could possibly be a son of William, but I have not seen the 1840 census for William to see if he had a son David's age. If he was William's son, then he was born before William's marriage to his first wife, unless she was already pregnant or David's age is off in the record or William had a wife before Drucilla.
I have found a possible child for David and Mary: Emmarilla McBrayer, who was born in 1859. Her death record is as follows:
Name Emmarilla Mcbrayer Cooley
Event Date 01 Sep 1933

Birth Year (Estimated) 1859

James Brier Born in 1815 in Ohio
How fun it is to find two people who are so similar that they are confused in various genealogies! Today’s subjects are a James Brier 1815-1894 and the other is a James Brier 1815-bf1860. These Jameses are first cousins. One is the son of John Brier and Damaris West and the other the son of Andrew Dickson Brier and Elizabeth Thornby.
I have seen where these two men have been combined into one. I know it is confusing to find two James Briers, both born in 1815, both born in Ohio, both moving to Iowa before 1850, but I assure you, they are two different people.
James Brier, son of John Brier and Damaris West was born on February 15, 1815 in Champaign County, Ohio. He married Sarah A. Babb on April 24, 1855 in Iowa and had several children. He died on July 20, 1894 in Brighton, Washington, Iowa. He is buried in Washington County, Iowa. Every census record in which he is found, he has been living in Washington County, Iowa. For people who confuse the two Jameses, this is the one they add the wives and children of the other James to.
James Brier, son of Andrew Dickson Brier and Elizabeth Thornby was born in 1815 in Miami County, Ohio. According to his father’s will, James Brier had died prior to 1860 (which is when the will is written) and stated he was “late of Henry County, Iowa.” This information works quite well with the marriage/census records for James Brier and his second wife, Nancy Brier as they resided in Henry County, Iowa. James married his first wife, Catherine Ann Carter in Miami County, Ohio before moving to Henry County, Iowa. Catherine died in 1851 and is buried in Henry County. James married Nancy in 1852 in Henry County, Iowa and according to the 1860-1885 census records found for Nancy, she was living with no husband and her two surviving children from her marriage with James. It appears she never remarried, though, she may have had a child out of wedlock, or taken in someone elses child in 1870 as a Lucy J. Brier is living with her who is age 4. This Lucy may also be a child of one of James’s children with Catherine. I need to do further research on her.
So, if these two men were the same person, then that would mean that he married first to Catherine and after she died in 1851, he married Nancy. In 1855, he would have married Sarah. Nancy did not die, so they would have to divorce for the marriage to Sarah to happen. Nancy, however, had children born in 1855 and 1857. This means that there were indeed two different James Briers: a James who married Nancy and a James who married Sarah.
The only question is whose wife was Catherine? While I cannot prove this directly with records, I can place my best guess using the records I do have. As you see from above, I believe Catherine was the first wife of James, son of Andrew. This is because in 1860, their son, Harrison, is living with William Brier and his wife Priscilla. William would be his uncle as he is also a son of Andrew. Also, the fact that Andrew’s will states his son James was from Henry County, Iowa, and that Catherine died and was buried in the same county also points strongly that she was married to James, son of Andrew.

Sherod Moses Callaham or Sherod and Moses?
As one can see from the title, I want to hash out this person or people. It is very commonly see in many genealogies that Sherod was Sherod Moses Callaham. I have been looking at many trees and records that are available to see what I can determine about this man or men.
First we want to tackle what we know about Sherod. He is the son of Nicholas Callaham and Mary Green. He married Mary Ussery, daughter of John Ussery on October 3, 1786 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. We know that she is the daughter of John because he is stated as surety of the marriage record. This is really all I have been able to find on Sherod at this time.
Now lets look at Mary, his wife. On March 7, 1798, a Molly Calliham married a Mathew Calliham in Lunenburg County, Virginia. John Ussery again served as surety. On November 24, 1803, Mary is named in her father's will as Mary Calliham. Mathew Calliham serves as a witness to this will. It is believed that Molly and Mary are the same person, since Molly is a nickname for Mary and since she is a daughter of John and they both appear in the will of John Ussery in some form or fashion.
Now, lets look at what we have for Moses Callaham. On January 1, 1800, a Moses Callaham married a Polly Ussery in Lunenburg County, Virginia. This Polly is said to be "wife of Moses, daughter of John Ussery" in a land transaction. On December 12,1805 sale of John Ussery's property, both Moses and Mathew buy land from John.
I feel that Sherod and Moses must be two different people, and here is why:
1. If Mary remarried to Mathew in 1798, then Sherod would most likely have died sometime prior. Though I am sure it did happen, it was very uncommon for a women to leave her living husband and marry her brother-in-law in this time. Mathew is also still alive in 1805, so Mary would still be married to him... unless she left him and went back to his brother?
2. In 1810 census, Moses is listed as being between 26-44 years of age. If Moses and Sherrod were the same, Sherrod would be listed as 45+ since he would have been well over 50 at the time.
3. Polly is not necessarily the daughter of the same John Ussery. John had a son named John, and depending on how old he was, he could have had a daughter who married Moses by 1800. This could also explain why both men (Mathew and Moses) bought land from John Ussery's estate.
4. If this Polly was the same one as Molly and Mary, then why did her father not serve as surety and why was she listed by her maiden name instead of her married name as she was in her previous marriage record?
I feel the confusion of Sherod and Moses comes from the fact they both married women who were named Mary Ussery (Molly and Polly are both nicknames for Mary) and both Marys were daughters of a John Ussery. It would seem from the information gathered that Sherod and Moses were more likely two different people. I have no idea who Moses's parents would be, except perhaps he was a cousin or brother of Sherod. Moses would have been born after 1765 for the 1810 census to be accurate.
Moses Callaham and Polly Ussery had the following children: Martha, Elizabeth, Dolly, Patsey, Henry, James, John and Colin. I have no children recorded for Sherrod and Mary Ussery, or for Mathew and Mary.

Elam Farmer
This post will attempt to hash out all the Elam Farmers living around Chesterfield County, Virginia in the 1700s. I am a descendant of one Elam Farmer who married a woman named Polly, through his son, George.
The first Elam Farmer I will look at is my ancestor. Elam Farmer was
born before 1745. He died in 1811. He was married first to an unknown woman. With this unknown woman, he had at least three children. George was born around 1765. Tabitha was born on February 13, 1775. She married a Thomas Boles. He also had a son named Elam who had died by 1811, presumably without child. Elam, born before 1845, lists himself as Elam Farmer Sen'r in his will, so he must have had a son named Elam at some point. On September 10, 1795, Elam married to his second wife, Polly Harding. Some people say she is a widow and her maiden name was Hudson, but I cannot find any proof of this. Polly was considerably younger than Elam, as she was still able to have children. The 1810 census of Chesterfield County, Virginia lists 2 females between 0-10 in Elam's home. One of these should be Anna Farmer, the only unmarried daughter listed in her father's will. The other daughter is not known and probably died before the will in 1811. Some
people list the Elam Farmer who married Polly Harding was the son of
Lodowick Farmer and Sarah Cheatham. Lodowick's will, however, does
not mention a son named Elam. There is a connection between Elam and
the Cheathams, as we see several mentions of Cheathams in Elam's
will, but being that his father, Elam Farmer married second to Phebe
Cheatham, that would explain the connection. Phebe and Sarah were
sisters. Both children of Benjamin Cheatham and Grace Williams.
The next Elam is the one who married Lucy Nunnally. Though I do not know for sure that her name was Lucy, it seems to be the most common name given to this Nunnelly woman. In the will of John Nunnally, from 1765, it lists grandchildren, Elam Jr and Martha. I feel that this Elam Jr. is my ancestor, who married second to Polly Harding. In his will, Elam Farmer had married a second wife, Phebe Cheatham. The following children, in addition to Elam and Martha, are listed as Henry, Lodowick, Hezekiah, Mary, Rhoda, Salley, and Judith.
A third Elam is one who married Mary Stratton. They were married in 1808 in Powhatan County, Virginia. This Elam is the son of Hezekiah Farmer and grandson of the Elam and Phebe Cheatham Farmer. Hezekiah Farmer left land to his son Elam in Powhatan County, so it seems logical that this Elam, who married and lived in Powhatan County was Hezekiah's son. In 1820, Elam and Mary had 3 living children, 2 sons between 0 and 10 and one daughter between 0 and 10.
In 1810, there is an Elam Farmer living in Goochland County, Virginia. He is listed as 26-44 years old. His wife is 16-25 years old and his children are one son, 0-10 and one son, 10-15. I do not know where he fits in our tree. Any help is appreciated.
In 1830, there is an Elam Farmer living in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He is listed as 40-49. There is no wife listed. He has 3 sons, one is 15-19, one is 10-14, and one is 5-9. This could be the Elam who married Mary Stratton. His 2 sons under 10 from the 1820 census could be the two older sons. The daughter from 1820 could have been married. Mary could have died. Without further information on the family, I cannot tell yet.
So, you have the following tree
Elam Farmer married Lucy Nunnelly
...Elam Farmer married unknown
......Elam Farmer
...Elam Farmer married 2nd Polly Harding
Elam Farmer married second to Phebe Cheatham
...Hezekiah Farmer
......Elam Farmer married Mary Statton.

Update on Blog
I have a new blog where I am placing my information in detail. I am leaving this blog to hash out difficult people and post questions and concerns with research I am doing. As you may have noticed, this blog has not been posted in since last year, almost a full year ago. I have not been doing a lot of new research with which to write about since the birth of my daughter, so I have not had anything to write. I still am not doing a lot of heavy research, just here and there.
I am trying to update my new blog with my files so that they can all be viewed. It is a slow going process, so patience is necessary!
My new blog is jcgenealogy2.blogspot.com. Please go there to see my research. If you look under "Introduction" you will see the trees that I have begun to enter. Please feel free to browse and leave comments as needed.

Oscar Lyle
Wow, talk about a confusing family! I am researching the family of Jessie B. Lyle and Caroline Cynthia Fleeman. They had a son named Oscar born in 1872, according to the 1880 census records. I wanted to try and find out if Oscar had any children or even married, and being a somewhat uncommon name, I though that would be easy! Boy was I wrong.
Did you know there were TWO Oscar Lyles born in 1872... both living in Jackson County, Georgia... Both married women named Ella... Come on! How much more confusing can this get! To top it all off, one of the Oscar's had a mother who's maiden name was Freeman... the other Oscar's mother has a maiden name of Fleeman. So, you can see where they are often confused for each other!
Here, I am going to attempt to separate them out, so the confusion can end!!
Oscar #1: Oscar O. Lyle, son of Isaac H. Lyle and Frances Freeman. (I have not really researched Isaac and his wife since they are not related directly to me).
Oscar #2: Robert Oscar Lyle, son of Jessie B. Lyle and Caroline Cynthia Fleeman. I have researched Caroline's line. This Fleeman branch ties into my Farmers.
Both Oscars are living in Jackson County Georgia with their parents in 1880.

Just studying the census records, you can tell the two families apart!! I have seen so many mistakes in files that could have been fixed by just checking out census records more closely! (For instance, I have an 1870 census record that shows a man age 35, and also in the home is a woman age 70. I have seen people assume it is his mother. Upon closer inspection of the record, you see that the man is recorded as white and the woman as black. The woman is also noted as bring a house maid. So it is clear from the record she is NOT his mother!)

James McCollum and Eliza Mullinax
James McCollum was born in 1794 in Pickens County, South Carolina. He married Eliza Mullinax. She was born in 1809 in Pickens County, South Carolina. I do not know very much on this couple. When I first started researching this family, I had Eliza's maiden name as Mauldin. I am not sure where this came from since I have never seen a record with Mauldin on it. The death certificate of their son, William Earl, lists Eliza's maiden name as Mullinax. I do not know her parents. If anyone has a clue to point me towards them, please let me know!
I know of six children for this couple.
1. Jane Elizabeth McCollum was born in 1828 in Pickens County, South Carolina. She married William Peter Gilstrap. They had 8 children: William Andrew, John Wesley, Susan Athalinda, Elizabeth Ann, Sherman T., Martha Jane, Sarah Elizabeth and Emma Josephine.
2. Eliza A. McCollum was born in 1830 in Pickens County, South Carolina. I know very little on her. I know she was unmarried in 1860. Did she marry after 1860 or did she pass away? Any info is appreciated!
3. Malissa McCollum was born in 1832 in Pickens County, South Carolina. I suspect she married before she was 18, but to who?
4. James Wesley McCollum was born on July 31, 1835 in Pickens County, South Carolina. He married Jane S. Mauldin. They had 10 children: Harriett, James Lindsey, Lydia A., Ranson Nile, Elijah Cannon, Abraham Ford, Sallie Essie, Lillie Bell, Mary and Daisy. He died on January 20, 1905 in Pickens County, South Carolina. He and his wife were buried at Tabor United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pickens County, South Carolina.
5. Martha M. McCollum was born in November 1837 in Pickens County, South Carolina. She married Tillman Smith. They had the following children: Olivia and Laurence A. She died on January 30, 1931 in Pickens County, South Carolina.
6. William Earl McCollum is my ancestor. I will include more details on him in a future post.
James died after 1870 and Eliza died after 1860. Anyone know where they were buried?

Elijah Stamps and Edmund Stamps
Another mystery to solve! I noticed while researching the children of James Stamps and Elizabeth Davis that two of the children may be confused or that one doesn't really exist. Elijah Stamps is said to be born c. 1815. I have not seen ANY records for an Elijah being the son of James and Elizabeth. There are, however, records for Edmund H. Stamps.
Here are the census records I have for Edmund's family.
1850 Census: White Co. TN
Stamp Edmund 26 TN
Stamp Eliza H. 23 TN
Stamp Eliza 2 TN
South Joshua 19 ??
1870 Census: Putnam Co. TN
Stamps Elizabeth 80 VA (This is Elizabeth Davis)
Stamps Elizabeth 43 TN (Edmund's wife)
Stamps James 15 TN
Stamps Mary Ann 14 TN
Stamps Martha 11 TN
Stamps Edward 5 TN
Stamps Nancy 9 TN
His wife was Elizabeth Selby. The "Eliza" in the 1850 census record seems that it should be Elija instead.
The researchers who include Elijah (b. 1850) in their files seem to have the same list of children for Elijah as they do for Edmund. Odds are that if they both existed, they would not have named their children the exact same thing. It seems more likely that the two are being confused, or that Elijah (1815) never even existed. In the early census records for James and Elizabeth, only 2 sons are listed as being born before 1820. One would be Sanford who was born in 1811 and the other William who was born around 1813. There was another son, James, who was born in 1816, but he died young, so therefore is not listed on the census records. In order for there to be an Elijah (1815) there should have been another son recorded on the census, unless he was not living with his family.

Samuel Ennis Keeton
So, there appears to be two Samuel Ennis Keetons. One born December 27, 1877 in Joplin, Missouri and died on February 13, 1972 in Comanche County, Texas. The second Samuel Ennis Keeton was born on May 18, 1879 in Boxley, Newton County, Arkansas and died on September 20, 1871 in Salem, Marion, Oregon. Every tree I have looked up has the first birthdate (only recorded as May 1880) with the 1972 death date. Clearly these two Samuel's are being confused! Most people state that Samuel Ennis Keeton was born May 1880 in Newton County, Arkansas and died on February 13, 1972 in Comanche County, Texas and as being a child of Joseph S. Keeton and Zella S. Whiteley.
It seems that people are just combining the two to fit the records they find, but there are two set of census records for each Samuel.
Samuel Ennis Keeton (1877-1972) married Willa Walton White on October 16, 1898. They had 10 children: Finis Fletcher, Mary Stella, Clarence Boyd, Louella May, Lillie Bernice, Willie Pauline, Robert Victor, Chester, Lester and Kittie Marie.
Samuel Ennis Keeton (1879-1971) married Ruth Bernetta Robinson and had the following children: Thelma Elizabeth, Samuel Ennis, Jack R., Thisba and George L.
Most people attribute the first Samuel to Joseph and Zella, while the 1900 census suggest the second one is more likely their son. Part of the confusion is that the Texas death certificate lists the first Samuel's father's name as Joe Keeton. Perhaps they are both sons of a Joseph? Also, the first Samuel is married by 1900, so why would he be on the census with his parents if he is already married?
In 1880, Samuel, son of Joseph and Zella is listed as 1 year old and being born in Arkansas. I cannot find a second Samuel born in 1877 anywhere, however, there is an S. Keeton age 3 years old, born in Missouri and listed as a son of J. M. Keeton. They are living in Bates County, Missouri. Perhaps the J. stands for "Joe?"
In 1900, Samuel, son of Joseph and Zella is listed as 20 and being born in May 1880 in Arkansas. The other Samuel is married to Willa and listed as being born in Feb. 1877 in Missouri. They are clearly TWO different people.
1910, Samuel has married Ruth and is living in San Jose County, California, age 30 born in Arkansas. Samuel and Willa are living in Brown County, Texas.
I have not found either Samuel in 1920.
In 1930, Samuel and Ruth are living in Los Angeles County, California. Samuel and Willa are living in Brown County, Texas.
In 1940, Samuel and Ruth are still living in Los Angeles County, California. I have not found Samuel and Willa.
It is clear there are two Samuel Ennis Keetons, both are probably sons of a man named Joseph. I feel, however, that the Samuel listed on most genealogies as the son of Joseph and Zella Keeton is incorrect and that the Samuel Ennis who married Ruth and lived in California is actually their son. If anyone has a document that says otherwise, please let me know!

Venting about Enoch Reece
Don't you just hate when someone tells you your research is wrong, even though you have all the supporting documents and records to prove you are right, especially when that person refuses to show their documentation!
Well, that is what has happened to me over the last couple of weeks. I have been trying to correct someone who has posted some incorrect information, but they refuse to correct it because they believe their info is right, even when shown numerous records and documents stating their position is incorrect or at least suspect.
It all started when I visited Find-A-Grave.com to update some links in my master file. I was going back in my Reece line and noticed a change in the memorial for Enoch Reece. It had a second wife and more children and parents linked. I was a bit confused since the parents linked were not my Enoch's parents and I had never heard of a second family for Enoch. So, I emailed the owner of the memorial and told him I thought he had two Enochs confused. He replied that he did not and what he had was true. I pointed out some obvious reasons first, both women were reportedly married to Enoch at the same time. His response to that was that his dad had more than one wife at the same time so Enoch did too. Well, without documents and proof I highly doubt that. While it did happen, it was a rare occurrence.
I replied with a more detailed reason for why I believed that there were two different Enochs, one who married Sarah Halk and one who married Sophia Galloway and they were not the same.
First I noted census records.
I also noted how every census record for Enoch and Sarah listed Enoch as being born in 1795-1796 while every census record for Enoch and Sophia (except 1860 which notes and 1800 birthdate) lists Enoch as being born in 1793. Also, Enoch who married Sarah was always listed as being born in North Carolina while Enoch husband of Sophia was always listed as being born in South Carolina. Since Enoch who married Sarah is not found after 1860, he mostly likely died before the 1870 census. This would be further validated with the fact that Sarah was reported as a widow in 1870 and 1880. In 1870 she is living with her son John and in 1880 she is living with her grandson, Bryson, both in Haywood County, North Carolina.
I had also noted that Enoch who married Sarah Halks was the son of Anthony Reece (who he had the Enoch listed with on Find-A-Grave) and Enoch who married Sophia Galloway was the son of Ambrose Reece. He flat out stated I was wrong and he had never heard of Ambrose Reece. I then noted that I have transcripts of estate records (transcribed by my grandfather's first cousin) which state: "State of North Carolina...
Buncomb County... Know all men by these presents that we John Reese, Jane Thompson & Enoch Reese of the State and County aforesaid being the lawful heirs of Rose Reese late deceased of Hall County State of Georgia..." This is not the only record that lists Enoch as son of Ambrose. I have not found any for Anthony, but I do not doubt that there was an Anthony with a son named Enoch, just not the Enoch who married Sophia Galloway. The above document was recorded in January of 1829, which works very well with Enoch husband of Sophia since he lived in Buncombe County in 1830.
One reason I feel that these Enoch's were confused, other than their close age and location, is the fact that they both had sons named John who were born in 1825. John, son of Enoch and Sarah moved to Texas where he died in 1898. He married Allif Evans and had a number of children. John, son of Enoch and Sophia died much sooner in 1869 in the Carolinas. He married Clarinda Nix and also had children.
I feel that Enoch who married Sarah and the Enoch who married Sophia are two very different people. The records I found seem to support this. If anyone out there has proof that the above reason is incorrect, please let me know.

William Stamps and Sarah Sanford
Again, I have a question on the children of another Stamps couple. William's will mentions sons Edmund and Sanford and a son-in-law John B. Cheney. Most people say that John's wife was named Martha, though the will does not state. I do not possess any records that actually say her name, but I am sure some exist somewhere. (If anyone has one or can point me towards one, that would be great!)
Now, most people have a John and a James as sons of William and Sarah. The will does not mention them, even though they were still alive at the time of the will. I know they lived in the same area with William and Sarah, but lack any actual proof they were sons.
I have seen several issues with James Stamps (supposed son of William and Sarah) and it seems he has been confused/merged with another James Stamps, who was the son of John Stamps and Purthenia Davis. I have added the following note to my files: "I have noticed an error and am going to make an assumption as to what should be correct. James Stamps, son of John and Purthena Dodson Stamps is said to have been born on August 6, 1779. James Stamps, son of William Stamps and Sarah Sanford is also said to have been born on the same date. My thoughts are that at some point these two Jameses have been confused and the date on one was never corrected or changed. Since the burial of James, son of William and Sarah is known (though I have not seen the grave stone) I will assume the August birth date is published there and the James Stamps, son of John and Purthena is the one that is incorrect. Unless someone shows me a record or I find one that states otherwise, I will leave my file this way." I have also noticed that James, son of William and Sarah, married Elizabeth Davis and James, son of John and Purthenia, married Sarah "Betty" Davis. As you can see, they were born around the same time and married women with similar names. They also both were born in Virginia and moved to Tennessee. I can see where the mix up can happen. (Any further incite would be welcome!!)
Also, I see a note about a son that William and Sarah raised named Richard Stamps, son of a Steven Stamps from up north. How do they relate to his family? I have not previously heard of this before this week and am curious about this story.

Stamps Questions
Well, I am still working heavily in my Stamps family and I am curious to know if anyone has proof of the following relationships in their files.
The following children of John Stamps and Purthenia Dodson:
1. Nathan Stamps
2. Joseph Stamps
3. Martin Stamps
I do not doubt Nathan's kinship with this family, but am reluctant to include him based on circumstantial evidence, like having a son with the middle name of Dodson and his son being mentioned in letters as a cousin to other Stamps known to be in the John / Purthenia line.
I do not have any records in my files connecting those three children with John and Purthenia. Any information concerning them will be helpful!
The following children of William Stamps (son of John and Purthenia).
1. William Stamps
2. Thomas Norman Stamps
3. Jefferson Stamps
4. Vianna Stamps
I do not have any records for this family.
The following children of James Stamps and Sarah Betty Davis
1. Melissa Stamps
2. Angelina Stamps
3. Samuel Stamps
4. Lucinda Stamps
5. Nathan Stamps
I know that Angelina and Samuel are siblings since Samuel's children are living with her in 1860. Any further records appreciated!
The following children of Hosea Stamps and Catherine Ector
1. Jetta Stamps
2. Drucilla Stamps
3. William Edward Stamps
4. Jane Stamps
5. Eliza Ann Stamps
I would appreciate any records linking these children to their parents!
I have used the work of Will Stamps as a basis for most of my own Stamps research. Most of what are in his files are accurate and I have been able to verify much of his information on my own. The above are just a few that I have not been able to verify from his work.
Thank you so much!!!
